Worldly Amusements and Pleasures

Another year has gone so quickly and we are entering a new year, one that was ushered in with wild parties and will be continued all through this year. We are living in a world that seeks only pleasure. I am a Bible believing person and I want to know what the Bible says about this subject, so lets start a study of a few verses that cover this subject.

Galatians 5:19-21

New English Translation (NET)

19 Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity, depravity,20 idolatry, sorcery, hostilities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish rivalries, dissensions, factions, 21 envying, murder, drunkenness, carousing, and similar things. I am warning you, as I had warned you before: Those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God!

Hebrews 11:25

New English Translation (NET)

25 choosing rather to be ill-treated with the people of God than to enjoy sin’s fleeting pleasure.

Ecclesiastes 2:11

New English Translation (NET)

11 Yet when I reflected on everything I had accomplished
and on all the effort that I had expended to accomplish it,
I concluded: “All these achievements and possessions are ultimately profitless—
like chasing the wind!
There is nothing gained from them on earth.”

Luke 8:14

New English Translation (NET)

14 As for the seed that fell among thorns, these are the ones who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the worries and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature.

Summary:

1/ it is a work of the flesh and accomplishes nothing for the soul and spirit.

2/they pass away quickly and are no real value.

3/ they hinder us from hearing the word of God.
